The Central Highlands and some areas to the south will be hit by heavy rains and local residents should be vigilant for resultant dangers - with landslides expected in mountainous areas, and flooding likely to occur in low-lying areas.

In a meeting of the central Steering Board for Flood and Storm Prevention yesterday afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai asked provinces to guide ships and boats out of dangerous areas.

Hai also asked provinces to check all resident quarters in the endangered areas and set up plans to move people to safer areas and ensure safety for boats in anchorage.

The Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Bui Minh Tang, said that the area between Quang Tri and Phu Yen province is particularly dangerous.

By 3pm yesterday, the central Steering Board guided more than 48,000 boats and over 238,000 fishermen to safety.
