The provincial People Committee of Quang Nam has recently approved the plan that expands walking zone in the ancient town of Hoi An. The plan will be enforced beginning of April 1.

Walking areas now include the 2-square-kilometer historic neighborhood in Minh An Ward. It will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and then from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

At night, the walking zone will be expanded to cover sites like the 17th-century temple Tuy Tien Duong Minh Huong, the Cam Pho Temple, and a gallery of XQ embroidery paintings.

Currently this area is open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The expanded walking zone will attract more pedestrians and limit motorbikes on the streets. This plan is part of the bigger plan that will turn the town of Hoi An into a regional tourist city free of motorbikes and pollution of noise and air.

Last year, Hoi An attracted over 3.4 million tourists last year, an increase of more than 20 percent from 2012. The key attractions so far have been the communal houses, Japanese bridge and tailor shops. Rural villages have turned to be a more growing interest for overseas tourists.
