Built by Nguyen Dynasty from 1805 to 1945, The Citadel of Hue owns a classical landscape with historical architectural site – the World Cultural Heritage.

The Citadel is situated on the Northern bank of the Perfume River with an area of 500 ha and a system of three circles of ramparts which are Kinh Thanh (Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (Royal Citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden Citadel). 

The Capital Citadel which was built in 1805 under the reign of King Gia Long and completed in 1832 under the reign of King Ming Mang. Over 200 years to now, it still remains original with about 140 small and large constructions. With the square in shape and almost 10 km in circumference, 6 m in height, 21 m thick and 10 entrances, it also has 24 bastions on the top of the walls to be established for defensive purposes. The Citadel also has an ancillary gate to connect the Tran Binh Bastion called the Thai Binh Mon (Peace Gate).

The Royal Citadel was built in 1804 but totally completed in 1833, under King Ming Mang’s reign. The Royal Citadel was located in the centre of the Citadel in which there were highest offices of Viet Nam's feudalism and sanctums honoring the cult of decreased Emperors. It has a nearly square form, with each side more than 600m in length, built of brick 4m high, 1m thick. Around the Citadel is a system of protection trench. Tourists can access to the Imperial City by four entrance gates. In particular, Noon Gate is only used for the King. Royal Palace includes more 100 unique beautiful constructional works divided into many sections:

-         Sector of the Ngo Mon and the Thai Hoa Palace: This is a place for setting up various grand ceremonies.

-         Sector for worship shrines of the King of the Nguyen dynasty such as Trieu Mieu, Thai Mieu, Hung Mieu, The Mieu and Phung Tien temples.

-         Sector of internal affairs office: Storehouse for precious objects, workshop for manufacturing various useful articles.

-         Sectors of the Kham Van palace and the Co Ha garden: This is a place for studying or enjoying themselves of the princess.

The Forbidden Citadel was located inside the Imperial City, behind the Throne Palace, used for the king and his family. It was built early in King Gia Long's reign in 1803 with the name “Cung Thanh”. It was renamed into Tu Cam Thanh in 1821. Constructed with brick walls 3.72m high, 0,72 m thick, about 1,230 m in circumference, its front and back sides are 324 m each while either left and right side is more than 290 m including 50 architectural constructions of different sizes and 7 gates for facilities of entrance and exit. It consists of many famous sectors such as Dai Cung Mon (the Great Place Gate) is in the front side for Kings; Can Chanh Palace is the place for every day working of Emperors; Can Thanh is an Emperor's Private Palace; Khon Thai Residence (Queen's Private Apartment) was only used for the Queen.
