Notre Dame Cathedral

HomeHo Chi Minh Travel Guides → Notre Dame Cathedral

A French priest named Colombert started constructing this famous Cathedral on October 7th, 1877.

The Notre Dame Cathedral with the French architecture design was executed under the instructions of a well-known French engineer Baurad and all building materials of the church were imported from France. The Notre Dame Cathedral was christened “Basilica” on 7th and 8th December 1959, followed by the approval of The Holy See of the Vatican.

Completed in 1880, The Cathedral became the public center and worshipping place of Vietnamese Catholics ever since. The Notre-Dame Cathedral is located right in the center of Saigon beside the Paris Square.

The cathedral with its neo-Romanesque facade reflects the time of French colonial in the city. This facade with three arches gives an indication of the cathedral’s internal structure.

In 1959, the Cathedral was named Notre Dam Cathedral after Bishop of Saigon Joseph Pham Van Thien held a ceremony to install the statue of the Peaceful Notre Dam which was ordered from Rome.

Placed in a small garden in front of the cathedral, The Virgin Mary Statue looks more grandeur than its fact. The stained glass windows used to adorn the Notre Dame Cathedral were lost during World War II and have never been restored. The decoration inside the cathedral is relatively humble making a sharp contrast with other French cathedrals. Inside the cathedral is very cool and quite tranquil.

Located at the beautiful Paris Square in the center of the city, with the 40-meter high twin spires crowned with iron squires, this late 19th century cathedral has been a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. The church is very popular for its New Year and Christmas celebrations. Tourists can visit the cathedral from 9:30 am to 11 am on Sunday.
