Vung Vieng Floating Village

HomeHalong Travel Guides → Vung Vieng Floating Village

After sitting on the mother boat, tourists will be transferred by rowing boats or kayaking to come to Vung Vieng fishing village. This village includes about 50 families with the population of between 200 and 300 residents and nearly 100 children.

These families have lived in this village for generations. The language is Vietnamese. The village is a "floating village" living afloat like in the Mekong delta, so there are no structures built on land. The village is poor; only the wealthy families have tiled roof houses with radios, television sets, tables and chairs, etc. and their floating houses are spacious and clean. However there is one community house here in which the local people come to have meetings.

Thanks to the support of the tourists and travel companies, the Vung Vieng village builds a school for their children. With an area of 100m2, the school consists of 4 classrooms and 1 small room for teachers.

It is interesting to see the local children going to school. Their bustling calling and flopping rowing liven up the atmosphere. Looking at the small boats driven by tiny oars to go to school and the radiant faces of the children, tourists will feel confident in a bright future for the floating village. Coming here, tourist can donate some notebooks, pens to the village children.

Moreover, when visiting this village, tourists have an opportunity to join in “Vung Vieng night” which is considered an attractive and unique tourism product. In the evening, under the soft light of the moon and the oil lamps, travelers can sit on woven bamboo boats, breathe fresh air, listen to duel love songs, enjoy local specialties, view the fishermen catching marine products and especially drop flower garlands and colored lanterns for luck. It will be unique and unforgettable memories for tourists when coming back home.

If we are lucky, we will be taken part in the fishing village festival which is held once a year during the Hạ Long Tourism Week. In the festival, we can participate in a number of relaxing activities such as folk song singing contest, swimming competition, boat handling completion, food processing competition.
