Thay Cave

HomeHalong Travel Guides → Thay Cave

Located 25 km north-east of Quan Cave, next to the “stone park" in Ha Long is a cave with quite strange name of Thay Cave (Master Cave). the director of the Vietnam Conservation Centre of Heritage and Marine Entertainment Duong Nguyen explained that the name of the park is due to dozens of rocky islands here have different characteristics from those in Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave), and Thien Cung Cave. Meanwhile the structures of stones in Thien Cung cave and Sung Sot Cave have vertical direction; those in Thay Cave have horizontal direction. Each Stone Mountain contains hundreds of thousands stone blocks which were heaped up together look like stacks of giant books.

The entrance of the Thay Cave is adjacent to the water's edge. Unlike other caves such as Thien Cung, Dau Go, Sung Sot, etc, the floor in Thay Cave has a flat surface of sand look like a beach.

According to a survey of the Conservation Centre of Ha Long heritage and marine entertainment, the cave is 150 m deep and 30 m wide. The deeper the cave is, the lower the temperature is. Inside the cave is a small lake which is full of water flowing down from the top of the mountain. The natural iridescent stalactites reflected by the light outside the cave with murmuring sound of the stream makes the cave more magical stranger.

The arch of the cave is so immense with numerous all strange shapes of stalactites. Acceding to Mr Duong, the cave was called Thay (Master) due to in the cave there are a lot of stalactites with shapes of books and quills.

In front of the cave, there is a small rock block look like a reading table. As expectation of the Conservation Centre of heritage and marine entertainment, the Thay Cave will be turned into a unique beach in Ha Long Bay in the future.
