Siem Reap

Siem Reap literally means Siamese defeated, referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century. Today it is a province to the Northwest of Cambodia. The capital city of the province is also called Siem Reap, sitting right on the shore of the Tonle Sap Lake, which is the greatest sweet water reserve in whole Southeast Asia.

This city is the tourist hub in Cambodia, very close to the Angkor Archeological Park which has famous religious temples listed as a World Heritage site. Stretching over some 400 square kilometers, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire of the 9th to the 15th centuries. The most famous are the Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations.

The Park was listed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Siem Reap was then lagging behind in tourism facilities, minor surfaced roads and little in the way of nightlife. Tourism industry catered largely to hardy backpackers crossing the border with Thailand.

Now due to the attraction of the Park, Siem Reap turned into a boomtown with expensive hotels, bars and pubs and travel services. Budget hotels have mushroomed and tourism has become a fast growing industry. There is an array of places to stay or dine and a host of exciting activities awaiting the visitor in the city.

In a family holiday Vietnam, customers will often request for a side visit to Laos and Vientiane is often a must-see destination.
