Phnom Penh

Previously Phnom Penh was known as Krong Chaktomuk (Chaturmukha) which literally means "the City of Four Faces". The name refers to the meeting point of three rivers the Mekong, Bassac, and Tonle Sap. The current population of the city is about 2.2 million people, living on a total area of 376 square kilometers.

In 1373 it was called Phnom Penh, bearing the name of an old wealthy widow Daun Penh (Grandma Penh) who saved five statues of Buddha floating down the Mekong in a Koki tree. These statues were then moved to a temple built on a man-made hill of 27 meter in height.

Like other cities in Indochina, Phnom Penh has a feature of colonial buildings and mansions, tree lined boulevards. Its charm is however also found in lots of temples and pagodas and monumental Angkorian architecture.  Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modernity of other Asian capitals. A mixture of Asian exotica, the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits the visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The city has many attractions for tourists. These are the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, the Choeng Ek Killing Fields and Wat Phnom. It also has several market places selling carvings, paintings, silk, silver, gems and even antiques. Indeed, an ideal destination for a leisurely day tour.

In addition to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh is a gateway to an exotic land – the Angkor Archeological Park, listed as the world heritage site. This is the largest religious complex in the world, with century old temples of Angkor in the west.

In a family holiday Vietnam, customers will often request for a side visit to Laos and Vientiane is often a must-see destination.
