Hoi An

Hoi An City is located on the banks of the Thu Bon River. It had a reputation as a seaport under the name Faifoo for merchants from Japan, China, Portugal, and Italy and so on since the 16th century. During its golden age, tthe prosperous trading port of Hoi An was a major trading center of Southeast Asia, and was one of the main stations of the merchant ships to and from the Far East.

Under the kingdom of Champa (the 9th and 10th century), it was known as Lam Ap Pho, and was the popular port, attracting merchant ships from the Arabic, Persian, Chinese people. Many ancient bibliographic records indicate that for a long time, Lam Ap Pho played an important role in bringing economic prosperity for the Tra Kieu citadel and My Son Holy Land communities.

Also thanks to favorable water environment, plus other internal and external factors, the trading port regained its economic prosperity from the 16th century to the 19th century. The port was close to the existing Silk Road and Ceramic Road of merchant ships. Therefore it became a centre of trade between the merchants of Japanese, Indian, Siamese, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and French.

From the late 19th century, due to the impact of adverse factors, the port of Hoi An was gradually degraded and lost its importance, giving its historical role to a younger mechanical port in Da Nang. It is however this shift of role that has made less impact on ancient urban architecture of Hoi An.
